Our first award as Runner up in IBYE Wexford 2017.
Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur is an annual competition run by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices.
It is open to people aged between 18-35 across three categories:
- Best Business Idea
- Best Business Start-Up
- Best Established Business
We entered through our Local Enterprise Office here in County Wexford under the Best Business Idea for a sister business idea – Bosca Spraoi (that’s as much as we can say about Bosca Spraoi at the moment).
The first stage was an online application with an in-depth application form and video submission. The applicants were then brought forward for a boot camp where a brief pitch and interview with 2 judges took place. This was the first time Bosca Spraoi was presented to anyone and it’s very nerve racking putting forward an idea you’ve had like that as it’s really like giving a piece of you forward for criticism and approval of your peers.
Thankfully it went well and the participants were shortlisted to approximately 12 applicants. We were invited back for a 2-day boot camp where we presented our businesses / business ideas to the full group for the first time. The boot camp also consisted of 2 intensive days of presentation and finance training. These 2 days were invaluable as they really make you analyse your own idea / business and look at it from the outside in.
We then had 1 week to finalise our presentations and business plans for submission to the judging panel followed by a (strict) 5 minute presentation. The award ceremony was held the same evening in the Wexford County Hall.
So now that you know about the format of the competition you have a better insight into the process and how in-depth it really is, and that is just at the County level. The whole process took about 2-3 months from initial application to the award night.
We were absolutely delighted and surprised to place 2nd in our category of Best Business Idea as the competition was very strong. The prize included a monetary cash prize towards the development of the business idea and a beautiful glass trophy from Wexford stained glass artist Annette Whelan.
The winner in our category was Robert Byrne of connectjobs.com who went forward to the regional finals. We’d like to wish Robert the best of luck in the next stage of the competition and the future.
